The Old Atwood House Museum, MA

Sometimes, a trip down memory lane will help us to stop and take a look at life as how it was in the past and be thankful with what we have learned then and learn to be grateful with the present and anticipate the best for the future. If you have always enjoyed touring old, historical houses, then a trip to visit the Old Atwood House Museum at 347 Stage Harbor Rd, Chatham, MA in a MA rental tour bus is inevitable.

What was originally a discussion among six people of the Chatham Ladies’ Reading Club turned out to be a society that would soon preserve the records and artifacts related to the history of Chatham. The Chatham Historical Society was formed in 1923 and it was only 3 years later that they managed to get hold of the Atwood House. Other than adding on electricity to the house, the Old Atwood House remains unchanged from the time it was built and furnished – just like how it was during the 18th and 19th centuries. Every year, from the month of June until October, the Old Atwood House Museum is open for visitors via a guided tour, while from October 31st to May 31st, they have special group tours for students as well as organizations.

Inside the Old Atwood House Museum, visitors on rented tour buses will be able to see the some of the spectacular murals of Alice Stalknecht with a few rooms devoted to displaying the works of F. Spaulding Dunbar who designed and built boats in his own shop in Chatham, not forgetting the beautiful collection of miniature duck decoys and shell collection. The Atwood House went through a major expansion of restoration works and renovation that was completed in 2005, and they now have a rather large gallery that showcases the history of fishing in the area as well as another gallery that exhibits antique tool collection, and not forgetting, a Gift Shop that is packed with unique items that are mostly related to the museum’s collections.

For those who do not fancy visiting old homes for fear of sweating after all the walking, you will be thrilled to know that the Old Atwood House Museum is fully air-conditioned, so no more worries about sweaty armpits! They also have some special upcoming events for visitors such as the Haunted Happenings in October, Thanksgiving Weekend in November, and Hearthwarming (think Christmas!) in December, so if you have not yet plan any trips for these months, time to plan one to the Old Atwood House Museum soon – in a rented tour bus, that is!
